Basic Survival

Most Filipinos could understand English. For simple sentences, Google Translate can help. Better results can be expected from single words or short phrases.

Do not drink tap water. If it is your first time in Southeast Asia, it is recommended to only drink from bottled water (sealed) or canned drinks.

SIM Cards and Internet Access

The Philippines is served by two major mobile networks (Globe and SMART). You may get a free visitor pack (prepaid) from kiosks after clearing customs at the arrivals area.

Transportation

Taxi hailing apps are most recommended for first time visitors.

Grab
  • Metro Manila
  • Cebu City
  • Davao City
  • Iloilo City
  • Bacolod City
  • Baguio City

Public transit such as buses and light rail is not recommended for visitors. However, a jeepney ride is an experience you can’t miss (ask a nearby agent to accompany you).

Safety and Emergency Contact

The Philippines is a relatively “safe” country. Be street smart—stay mindful of your scanner and belongings. Pick pockets and petty theft may be an issue, specially in crowded areas (e.g. malls, markets).

For general emergencies (police, fire or ambulance), dial 911.
